You do not need to fully wake to lose sleep quality. Brief noise spikes can pull the brain from deep N3 into lighter stages or cause micro-arousals you never remember. Understanding your arousal threshold -- and how to lower it before bed -- is as important as blocking sound itself.
Micro-Arousals vs Full Awakenings

Masking: White, Pink, and Brown Noise
Steady sound raises the auditory background so intermittent spikes cross the arousal threshold less often. Pink and brown noise emphasize lower frequencies, which many find less harsh than pure white noise.
- Start at 40-50 dB measured at the pillow; increase only if spikes still wake you.
- Use a fan or dedicated machine placed away from the bed to avoid direct draft on the face.

Lowering Arousal Threshold Before Bed
