You can have a dark, quiet, cool room and still wake unrested if the air is stale. Overnight CO2 rises, humidity drifts, and allergens accumulate while you breathe 400-600 liters of air. Optimizing what you inhale for eight hours is one of the most overlooked levers in sleep quality.
Why Closed Bedrooms Become Stale
Each exhaled breath adds CO2 and water vapor. In a sealed modern bedroom with double-glazed windows, CO2 can climb from outdoor levels near 400 ppm to 1500-2500 ppm by morning. Lab studies link elevated overnight CO2 to more restless sleep, higher next-morning sleepiness, and reduced cognitive performance -- even when subjects do not feel "hot" or uncomfortable.

Ventilation Strategies That Work
- Crack a window 2-5 cm on opposite sides of the home when safe; cross-breeze beats a single sealed gap.
- Run bathroom or kitchen exhaust briefly before bed to pull stale air out, then stop to avoid noise.
- HVAC with MERV-13+ filter on fan-only mode circulates air without over-cooling; pair with temperature guidance.
- Dedicated HEPA purifier helps allergens but does not lower CO2; do not confuse particle removal with fresh air exchange.
- Heat-recovery ventilator (HRV) is the gold standard for tight modern homes in cold climates.
Humidity: The 40-60% Sweet Spot

- Summer: dehumidifier or AC dry mode if room feels clammy.
